One of the oldest zoos in Europe
The Moscow zoo is one of the oldest zoos in Europe. It was opened on 31 January 1864 according to the Julian calendar, and at the time it was called zoological garden. Now the Moscow zoo houses more than 8,000 animals, belonging to more than 1,000 species from all over the world. Certain species were bred by the zoo's specialists for the first time in the world.

Tour of the Moscow zoo
We invite you to a tour of the Moscow zoo. Here you can see our animals and learn something new about them. How pandas live and what they love the most, what do the largest apes – gorillas – eat, how zoos saved the Père David's deer and what the zoo does to prevent the extinction of rare species.

The online tour is led by the Elena Lysogorskaya, the head of the lectures and tours department.

Tour "History of the Moscow Zoo. A Tour of the Museum"
The Moscow zoo is one of the oldest in Europe. It was established in 1864. In our museum you can learn more about its history, and at the same time about the history of zoos in general. You will learn how zoos were created and why they are needed, you can discuss the details of the work of various specialists, without whom zoos could not exist. And, of course, we will talk about how the Moscow zoo faced the changes and difficulties that affected the whole country.
