A gallery of the world famous artist Ilya Glazunov
The Moscow State Art Gallery of Ilya Glazunov comprises two expositions in two separate buildings: one is the gallery of paintings by the world-famous artist Ilya Glazunov, and the other is the Museum of Russian Estates created by Ilya Glazunov based on his personal art collection. It includes a musical hall, a space for public lectures, discussions, conferences and concerts.

During the tour you will learn about Glazunov's early works, his academic works created at the Leningrad Secondary Art School and the Repin Institute of Painting, Sculpture, and Architecture, that were presented at the artist's first exhibition in Moscow in 1957. You will see Glazunov's self-portrait, his paintings on the theme of a man's solitude in a modern city, of the history of Russia in the 20th century, as well as his great historical paintings Russia the Eternal, The 20th Century Mystery, Market of Our Democracy, The Ruining of the Temple on Easter Night. The graphic works of Ilya Glazunov, author of hundreds of illustrations for classic literary works, have long become a part of Russia's artistic legacy. Visitors will see some of them, including pictures illustrating works of Fyodor Dostoyevsky and Alexander Blok. Ilya Glazunov is famous for his wonderful cycle titled 'The City' (1950s–1960s). It is a series of graphic and painted works. It is filled with a feeling of loneliness in a crowd, thoughts of different sides and states of a human soul. It is a diary of sorts, with his personal artistic notes about the life that we all live. You will also learn about another important direction that Ilya Glazunov worked on a lot. The portrait genre was what revealed his talent to the world. At the tour, the viewers will learn about the late period in work of Ilya Glazunov. The paintings dated back to 1990s–2010s are among the most curious in the maestro's legacy. They reveal his mature artistic experience — his unique talent as a history painter combined with a gift of philosophical metaphors, conceptual thinking, his view of modern times and global history. At the tour you will see Ilya Glazunov's famous paintings — Russian Beauty, Ivan the Terrible, Prince Dimitry, and others. He used a mixed technique for them — a special method of 'inlay' he invented: a combination of materials to meet his artistic goals. You will also learn about Glazunov as a historian, his views against the 'norsemen theory' expressed in his paintings "Grandsons of Gostomysl". At the 'Artist and the World' exhibition the audience will learn about a photo chronicle of life and work of Ilya Glazunov, starting from his childhood and up to his last years in the 21st century. Thousands of people queueing to his exhibitions in Manezh, opening of the Academy, Ilya Glazunov Art Hallery, and Museum of Social Classes of Russia, how his most famous paintings were created. Many celebrities of the 20th century posed for him — from film stars to top-tier politicians. These photos allow us to fully appreciate the artistic and personal scope of Ilya Glazunov.
